The margin of safety is the difference between actual or budgeted sales and break-even sales. It indicates how much revenue can decline before the business begins generating an operating loss under break-even analysis assumptions.
To calculate it, subtract break-even sales from actual sales. Divide the result by actual sales and multiply by 100 to find the percentage. For example, sales of 50,000 and break-even sales of 35,000 produce a margin of safety of 15,000, or 30%. A higher percentage generally indicates a greater sales buffer, but liquidity and costs still matter. Try Cash Cloud for free to explore sales and financial reporting tools.
